Jurors Reach Verdict in Chauvin Trial

Yesterday April 20th 2021, twelve jurors have reached a verdict in Derek Chauvin's trial in George Floyd's death. Chauvin has been found guilty on all counts across the board. We welcome this just verdict. This is a tremendous step in the right direction and we hope that a just sentencing follows. However, this does not undo the continuous systematic racism that Black people in America must face every single day. Soon, there will be the trial of another police officer that shot and killed 20 year old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Park last week. This ongoing cycle can only be broken once systematic racism and discrimination is acknowledged and addressed. Every person deserves to feel safe in the place they call home. It should be a given that especially marginalized communities feel safe and included, this is bare minimum. Imam Hassan Jama IANA Executive Director said, “No matter the color of our skin or where we come from, we deserve to live in communities where we are safe and our lives are valued. We deserve to exist in spaces where communities of color, particularly those of us who are Black, are not targeted, harassed, brutalized, and murdered by our public servants.”  We must continue to bring light to the injustices in our society and work toward a just system. We send our deepest condolences to the family members of George Floyd and all those affected by his death.
