IANA Condemns Discriminatory Rhetoric and Reports of Targeted Federal Actions Against Somali Americans in Minnesota
The Islamic Association of North America (IANA) expresses deep concern regarding the recent inflammatory public remarks made by President Donald J. Trump referring to Somali communities as “garbage,” and calling for their removal from the country. Such language is unacceptable, dangerous, and fuels hostility and discrimination against an entire population of law-abiding American residents.
In the days and weeks following these statements, IANA has received multiple reports of intensified attention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies toward Somali individuals — particularly in the State of Minnesota. Accounts include individuals being apprehended at their homes, workplaces, or while driving; sudden questioning of Somali-Americans and lawful residents regarding their identity, birthplace, and immigration status; and even informal profiling based on language or accent.
These developments have created an atmosphere of fear, confusion, and uncertainty. Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of Somalis in the United States are U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, many community members are now avoiding public spaces, missing medical appointments, and altering their daily routines due to concerns about harassment or ethnic targeting.
Somali Americans are integral members of Minnesota’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. They are business owners, healthcare professionals, educators, public servants, and students who contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing and prosperity of this state and our nation.
IANA urgently calls upon:
• The federal government and oversight agencies
• Both chambers of Congress
• State and local elected officials
• Civil rights and advocacy organizations
to unequivocally reject and condemn this rhetoric, investigate reports of discriminatory enforcement, uphold constitutional protections, and ensure no community is subjected to profiling or intimidation based on ethnicity, faith, or national origin.
We reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the dignity and civil rights of all people, and we stand ready to work collaboratively with partners at every level to restore trust, protect vulnerable communities, and promote unity over division.
